Why should we ditch plastic toothbrushes?

Have you ever thouht that every evening and morning the first and the last thing you touch is usually a toothbrush? If so, do you really want that the first thing you touch every day to be plastic?

A report by the National geographic in 2019 pointed out that 1 billion plastic toothbrushes are thrown away annually in the United States alone. The total number of plastic toothbrushes being produced, used, and thrown away each year has grown steadily since the first one was made in the 1930s. And because plastic is essentially indestructible, that means nearly every single toothbrush made since the 1930s is still out there in the world somewhere.

A large amount of these plastic toothbrushes end up in landfills and ocean. With time they breakdown into smaller pieces and wash up on to the shores. A huge amount of microplastics have contaminated sea salt around the world and are finding their way into the food chain via the salt in our diet.

Plastic toothbrushes consist of toxic chemicals that make them threatening to the environment. It also contains a good amount of phthalates and have been linked to diseases like asthma, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, and type II diabetes, and fertility issues.

Many plastic-free and reusable alternatives exist for toothbrushes. With sustainability and oral care in mind, the shift toward eco-friendly toothbrushes is exactly what we need to stop this pile-up of plastics while improving our own quality of life. Choose a toothbrush that would not only get your teeth cleaned but that is also safe for the environment.
